Seeking past GLP-1 users for smell and taste testing ($45)

Dr. Richard Doty, professor at the University of Pennsylvania, seeks past users of GLP-1 medications for smell and taste testing. Participants will be mailed an UPSIT and a WETT – a smell test and a taste test, respectively - as well as a detailed medical questionnaire to complete. The kit should take roughly one hour to complete. A pre-paid return envelope is included.

Compensation is $45 in the form of a check once the participant returns all materials.

Participants must provide proof of their prior GLP-1 prescription. If the participant is currently on a GLP-1 medication, they are ineligible for the study.

The researchers will not use any identifying information if they publish the results of the study.

Please contact the study coordinator (E: rsharetts@sensonics.com; P: 856-796-9177) to determine your eligibility or to ask questions.

This is a cool opportunity for anyone a few months out like me. I noticed food tastes different since starting, coffee especially, so I'd be curious what a formal test would show. Too bad current users can't join, since I'm still on it and down 8 lbs.

#3

The coffee thing is real for me too, used to love it and now it barely registers. I stopped a couple months back so I might actually qualify for this, seems like an easy hour for $45 and the data could help explain what's going on with our taste buds.

#4

I'd sign up but I'm still on it too, and the appetite part is the whole game for me. Once I finish, I might reach out - would be interesting to see if the taste changes I've noticed actually show up on a real test. Congrats on the 32 lbs btw, that's solid progress.

#5

Same here, still on it so no go for me, but my morning coffee went from the best part of the day to basically nothing, which is wild. Only down 4 lbs so the appetite stuff is still earning its keep, but I'm curious if the taste stuff fades after stopping since a few of you who quit seem to have qualified.

#6

Still on the stuff so I can't join, but I'm rooting for the coffee crowd here. Mine tastes fine on tirzepatide, but sweets lost almost all appeal early on and that's probably half my 58 lbs. Hope someone reports back on whether taste comes back after stopping.

#7

I'm in the same boat as you two, still on it so ineligible, though food tasting flat is exactly how my 22 lbs happened. If anyone who finished the kit can share later whether smell and taste bounced back after stopping, that would be genuinely useful info for those of us eventually coming off.

#8

Just checked my eligibility and I'm still on it, so no dice for me either. Beer is the one that changed for me early on, now it mostly tastes like grain water, which honestly made the 9 lbs easier. Really hoping someone who finishes the study posts whether things come back after stopping.

#9

Same here, still on it so I can't do the kit either. My only change so far is early-on food noise going quiet, which is probably why I'm only down 3 lbs so slowly. Count me in as another one hoping for a follow-up on whether taste returns after stopping.

#10

Down 42 lbs myself and I swear coffee smells weaker than it used to, so this study is right up my alley except I'm still on the med too. Another vote for someone reporting back on whether things sharpen up after stopping.

Down 60 lbs and french fries have tasted like cardboard to me since month two, so count me among the ineligible spectators. Whoever ends up doing the kit, please come back and share if the results show anything about things coming back after stopping.Teranga is an AI chat experience built by Boston Children's Hospital researchers to help caregivers facing hereditary cancer risks. Wish I qualified but I'm still on the med, so I'm another spectator. Chocolate went kind of bland for me around month three and water tastes oddly metallic some days, so I'm curious if the study picks up patterns like that. Hope someone who stopped comes back with what they find.

#13

Did the kit a couple years back for a different study and it took me way less than an hour, so $45 isn't bad for the time. Stopped my script in March and coffee finally smells normal again, just wished I'd found this thread before I tossed my proof of prescription paperwork. Keep the coordinator's email handy, they were pretty responsive when I asked about eligibility details.

#14

Did an UPSIT years ago and it was genuinely kind of fun, like scratch-and-sniff with stakes. I'm on Victoza and nothing too dramatic has hit my taste buds yet, mostly just reduced interest in sweets, so the Metallic Water posts here are interesting to me. If anyone completes it and gets published results, I hope they post them.

#15

Down 11 lbs since starting and coffee still smells right to me, but I stopped the med last month so I might actually email the coordinator. Curious if my taste changes come back the way yours did, reply 2.

#16

In for this since I'm still on Ozempic I can't qualify, but my sense of smell has been weird the whole 32 lb run - red meat smells almost sour to me now, coffee's the only thing that stayed normal. Hoping whoever does the test posts what comes back, the metallic taste threads make me wonder if it's more common than people admit.

#17

Signed up my info with the coordinator even though I'm only 5 lbs in, figured the earlier data points might help them too. My taste has been off since week two, chicken specifically tastes almost soapy now while everything else is fine, so curious if the questionnaire digs into which foods change. Hope someone posts the results once they come out.

Down 15 lbs and nothing dramatic smell-wise for me, but water tastes flat to me now which never happened before. Sent the coordinator an email since I stopped recently, so hopefully I can be one of the data points that gets published.
