Mounjaro
What it is
Mounjaro is a brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable made by Eli Lilly. It activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors — a dual mechanism that distinguishes it from semaglutide.
What it's used for
FDA-approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The same molecule is approved for weight management under the Zepbound brand.
Typical dosing schedule
Dosing schedules differ by person and are set by a prescriber. The pattern below is a commonly described escalation — it is informational only, not a recommendation.
| Dose | Typical timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 mg | Weeks 1–4 | Starting dose to help the body adjust. |
| 5 mg | Weeks 5–8 | First therapeutic dose. |
| 7.5 mg | As directed | Step up if needed and tolerated. |
| 10 mg | As directed | Further step up. |
| 12.5–15 mg | As directed | Higher maintenance doses for some patients. |
Common side effects
Commonly reported side effects include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and fatigue, most often after dose increases. Many people find symptoms ease over time, but persistent or severe symptoms should always be discussed with your prescriber. See our side-effects guide for management tips members commonly share.
Rough cost
Roughly $1,000–$1,100/month at US list price without insurance; savings cards and coverage can reduce out-of-pocket cost.
